Founders Circle: The Skyscanner Origin Story & What’s Next

How many times when we heard founders start with – ‘oh, I had a problem and so I decided to solve it’ – and eyes roll in the room? Well, Skyscanner started that way – born out of Gareth Williams’ frustrations in finding the cheapest flights and deals. He roped in two friends to start Skyscanner in 2003. Not many though has had such a beautiful exit as this Scottish-founded business. In 2016, it was acquired by Ctrip (now known as Trip.com Group) for approximately £1.4 billion (around US$1.75 billion). We catch up with two of the co-founders, and the founder mindset they’d bet on in the future.

We’re 20. Time to change it up and kick off with The Great Debate. Who has the best chance of triumphing? Will it be the intermediaries? Suppliers? Horizontals? New disruptors? Hospitality: The Future Is Not About Channels But About Guest Experience

Twenty years on, is it time we got over the direct vs indirect debate and focus on the hotel guest experience? Let them book where they want, ensure that when they show up, they get such a wow experience and they decide how they want to engage with your brand. We put the spotlight on what the different players are doing to put the customer first and what they are doing to own the experience, not the customer, even as they optimise their own distribution and channels.

Rebuilding Air Distribution: Can We Make It About the Customer Again?

You’d think selling an air ticket from Point A to Point B would be as easy as hailing a taxi ride by now – after all, it’s been almost 60 years since the concept of Global Distribution Systems emerged. Instead, it’s become even more complicated, fragmented, more disintermediated. How do we return the focus onto the customer and make it all about them in the Next 20? How should different players add value in the flight food chain?

Japan faces unique challenges. After automobiles, inbound tourism is now its second largest industry. It is targeting 60m by 2030, and concerns are mounting over its ability to handle the numbers. What happens when seeing is no longer believing – when images and videos can be created with just a few prompts? In the past, we relied on photos and videos as records of truth.
